Dr Joe Flood comes from a literary family, and worked as a mathematician and urban economist in CSIRO for many years. In 1994 he joined the United Nations to head up a new programme, and travelled to many countries. Until 2007, he continued to consult for international agencies on strategies and local data development.   

He has been publishing literary memoir, stories and poetry since 2022, in Australia, Britain, Ireland and the USA.  Reviews of his books launched in 2025 include:
